Many of our clients opt for minimal lab work but some also choose to do additional testing. Some prefer to have no
sonograms unless there is a clear medical indication for it
, while others find sonograms very reassuring. I can help
you to decide what's right for you. Your freedom extends beyond the birth. It begins with your choices throughout your
prenatal care, from labwork, screenings, and levels of care that suit you, to a detailed birth plan that you design.

I discuss with you ways to enhance your health. This will include a detailed evaluation of your diet and discussions of
ways that you might improve it. We will also talk about any supplements that you may be taking as well as possible
ideas for alternatives based on your needs.
I am comfortable with alternative therapies and many of my clients find
herbal or homeopathic medicines useful. Many client find chiropractic care helpful during pregnancy and I can help
with referrals to providers.
Occasionally prescription medicine is called for and I can prescribe that for you also as
needed.

Books and videos are available for loan and you are encouraged to use whatever method works best for you to
educate yourself, whether it's classes, books and videos, or journaling and dream analysis. Some clients attend
Bradley classes. Others use hypnotherapy. I will help you to find what's right for you. Addressing your confidence
level and ensuring that you are ready to give birth naturally are priorities in prenatal care.
When the time comes for your baby's birth, I will help
you to labor and birth in positions which both enhance
the process and your comfort.  More than half of my
clients opt for water birth which is particularly gentle
alternative.

I try to be present throughout my clients' active
labors, bringing in a second midwife to assist me as
the birth draws closer. There are no rules or agendas
at Lovers Lane Birth Center.
If you tear a little during
birth, I can suture you If you bleed more than is
expected, I have medications available to treat that
and if your baby needs a little help getting going with
breathing, of course I have resuscitation equipment
available at every birth.

Some women want to be surrounded by family
members during the birth, possibly including older
children.
Others prefer to make it a very intimate time
for the parents of the baby only. Those things should
be your choice.
What happens after the birth?
There is no rush to cut the umbilical cord, and the baby
stays where she belongs, skin to skin with her mother.
Gradually, she makes her gentle entrance into the world,
begins to breastfeed and integrates into her family.
When
everybody is ready, the expanded family goes home.
This is
usually between 3 and 5 hours after the birth.

A midwife comes to your house two to three days after the
birth to check up on you. She will make sure that
breastfeeding is going well and help you if you are having
difficulties. She will make sure that you're adjusting
physically and emotionally to being a new mother and that
you are caring for yourself optimally. She will take blood
for the newborn screening at that time and repeat it at an
office visit 2 weeks after the birth. Six to eight weeks after
the birth we have a final visit which may include a
complete physical and a pap smear.
But, is it really safe?
Midwifery care is simple, low tech care. By avoiding
interventions in the natural course of labor and birth,
midwifery clients avoid the risks that those interventions
may bring. The safety record for out-of-hospital midwifery
care is excellent
. This has been demonstrated in numerous
research studies and by the great statistics not only of my
practice but of home birth and birth center practices across
America. I monitor my clients closely. I know them well.
And when there are any concerns, I do not hesitate to call
one of the obstetric physicians with whom I have a
relationship. In a large metropolitan area such as DFW,
medical care is always only a few minutes away if needed.

What percentage of women are transported
to the hospital in labor?
About 10 percent of clients have to transfer to medical care
prior to or during labor. I always accompany transfer
clients to the hospital, coordinate continuity of care with
the hospital staff and provide support.
What percentage of Lovers Lane Birth
Center clients have cesarean sections?
Between 2 & 8 percent annually.

What does it cost?
The fees are about one third of typical physician and
hospital charges and are covered by most insurers.

What insurances do you accept?
We accept ALL insurance plans.  We are in-network
for the following:
Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO, PPO, POS
United Healthcare
Humana Choice Care
Beech Street
Health Smart
What happens at prenatal visits?
Prenatal visits are as long as you need them (up to 2 hours for the first visit) and as
frequent as you need them
; we're happy to see you as early in your pregnancy as you would
like
. They include both measuring and palpating physical changes and helping you to
prepare emotionally for the life changes which a new baby brings.
